Codex Tympanos combines elements of film and digital animation into a seven minute video which explores the genetic and psychocultural evolution of percussion and mystical iconography.
Codex Tympanos can be viewed either as a symphonic music video with its abstract storyline, or as a visually rich and highly synchronous projected accompaniment to live performances of Timpani Concerto #1 by James Oliverio.
Steve Walker designed and produced the film, as well as the live version which documents an interactive performance by Atlanta Symphony timpanist Mark Yancich. The Codex is an outgrowth of an earlier Oliverio/Walker experimental collaboration, The Messenger, which was premiered live with the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we might as well dance.
